Hygiene Kit Distribution in Kahda
Implemented by Al-Ta’awun Social Service (TSS)
Hygiene assistance for families displaced by conflict and drought in catchments 15, 14 and 3 of Kahda District.
Background
In response to the humanitarian crisis caused by conflict and drought across Somalia, TSS conducted a rapid needs assessment in Kahda District, particularly catchments 15, 14 and 3. These areas had received an influx of vulnerable internally displaced families seeking safety and basic services in Banadir Region.
Intervention
TSS coordinated the distribution of hygiene kits to the most vulnerable displaced households in the three catchments. Before the distribution, TSS coordinated with other partners working in the area.
The kits included soap, water containers (buckets), sanitary pads and disinfectants. The assistance aimed to improve personal hygiene and reduce the risk of communicable diseases in overcrowded settlements.
Target population
- Catchment 15: newly arrived internally displaced people from Lower Shabelle and Bay regions.
- Catchment 14: families displaced by armed conflict in Bay Region.
- Catchment 3: households affected by drought in Hirshabelle and Middle Shabelle.
Priority was given to female-headed households, older people, people with disabilities and families with young children.
Reported achievements
- Hygiene kits were distributed across the three catchments, improving access to basic hygiene supplies for displaced families.
- Brief sensitization sessions on safe hygiene practices took place during the distribution.
- No security challenges were reported during the distribution.
The kit quantity is ambiguously worded in the original report. A verified distribution total is therefore not presented here.
Challenges
- Demand exceeded the available supplies, leaving gaps in coverage.
- Limited access to water in some settlements reduced the effectiveness of the hygiene intervention.
Conclusion
The distribution provided immediate relief to vulnerable displaced communities in Kahda. The report calls for continued support to sustain hygiene promotion, expand coverage and integrate water supply interventions to strengthen resilience against disease outbreaks.
