Preserving Somali Heritage Through Youth, Dance and Poetry in Boosaaso

Programme update

On 22 May 2024, AL TA’AWUN SOCIAL SERVICE (TSS), working in collaboration with the Puntland Ministry of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage, concluded a five-day Somali Heritage and Culture Conference and Arts Development Agenda in Boosaaso, Puntland.

The programme brought together cultural practitioners, performers and community participants to strengthen appreciation of Somali heritage and expand opportunities for youth participation through traditional dance, artistic expression and poetry.

Activities and verified results

• 20 participants received practical training in Somali traditional dance, with particular emphasis on Dhaanto.
• 10 performers took part in a public showcase to present their talent and knowledge of Somali cultural heritage.
• Five poets participated in a poetry competition and received guidance on composition, structure and delivery.

The programme used practical training, live presentation, competition and facilitator feedback so that participants could learn through experience and exchange.

Looking ahead

TSS will build on this experience by strengthening documentation, inclusion and partnerships that enable Somali culture to support youth leadership, community dialogue and social cohesion.
