Qandala district faces huge socio-economic challenges which adversely affect the lives of the poor communities in the district whose main income source is livestock. The target villages of Dhaadaar and Unuun have been identified due to extreme water shortages due to recurrent droughts, deption of pasture and low production, low labor and income generating activities as well as high food prices contributing to the deterioration of the food security situation of the vulnerable communities. Currently, there is severe drought and water prices have gone very high as one barrel of water costs US $ 6-10 compared to US $ 1-2 before the drought. These high water prices are affecting the lives of the pastoral communities which force them to sell more livestock to supply water to the rest and in this way compromise the food needs of their households as they cannot afford the increased household expenses due to the drought. Therefore, they are in dire need of food assistance to help them cope with the situation and lift them up from becoming even more vulnerable. The rehabilitation of the water catchments in these villages will be very important to the community as they would be able to harvest more rain water for animal and household consumption and for long term storage during drought times. Since the water catchments will be implemented near the communities, it will also benefit women and young girls who will travel short distance to the project site compared to the current situation whereby they travel long distances in search of water for their households and hence become potentially at risk to gender based violence\u2019s, drop out from schools due to increased household needs as most of their day time is spent walking miles in search of water. We have selected the current living conditions in and looked at the needs of the local time is a good time to excavate a water catchment to benefit when the first rain Gu season. TSS is going to work with local leader\u2019s community members and local government to ascertain the most vulnerable community to benefit from the project and it\u2019s also going to show commitment by accountability to those who are engaged the project and to make sure that there is equal opportunity to all vulnerable people to exercise equal and fair distribution. The selection of the participants for this project will be based on a community based selection criteria – using food insecurity indicators, and ensuring that the most food insecure and vulnerable households are selected for participation. Selection of the participants will be done jointly by TSS, Community and Local Authorities. WFP will participate in the monitoring of the selection process to ensure that the right beneficiaries – food insecure, are selected in the project implementation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
